This little booklet was commissioned by the Joseph Howe Initiative as part of Joseph Howe's 200th birthday celebrations in 2004, and was designed to introduce him to a public that had somewhat lost touch with the words and deeds of 'the greatest Nova Scotian'.
Profusely illustrated, the text is made up of four essays, each of which explores one of the major interests and achievements and interests of Howe's life:

The Mentor of the Country, describing Howe's work as both newspaper publisher and politician in the cause of democracy and education;
An Unshackled Press, giving an account of his fight for free speech in 1835;
The Enchanted Ground, exploring Howe's love of Nova Scotia, and his celebration of it in both prose and poetry;
The Greatest Nova Scotian, assessing his achievements as both a conservative and a reformer throughout his life.

The book begins with a Foreword written by John Ralston Saul. Two of the essays are contributed by Michael Bawtree, formerly director of the Joseph Howe Initiative, and two by Halifax journalist Trevor J. Adams.
