I WAS COMING TO THAT THE FINAL ACT LIKE NO OTHER PRESS 2025
This is the third and final volume of Michael Bawtree's memoirs. In the first volume, As Far As I Remember, he recounted the years from his birth in Australian through to growing up in England during and after the Second World War. The second volume, The Best Fooling, captured his experiences as an immigrant to Canada and as an actor, educator, critic, dramaturge, and playwright. This volume picks up where that one left off, in 1977, at the Banff Centre. Michael continues his adventures in theatre, not just in Canada, as a director of music theatre, and in several other countries as part of the music theatre committee of the International Theatre Institute. Where once he imagined putting down roots in Canada's west, fate brings him to Nova Scotia, where he becomes director of drama at Acadia University and is the driving force behind the creation of the Atlantic Theatre Festival.
As in previous volumes, Michael writes with elegance and wit. His observations of people and his surroundings are deft and his descriptions evocative. His frankness about his final illness is poignant, without self-pity, and full of love and gratitude for his friendships and for everything -- even the losses -- that life provided him.
