'THE NEW SINGING THEATRE' BRISTOL CLASSICAL PRESS/ OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS NY1990
Michael Bawtree has been described as the pioneer of Music Theatre in Canada. He founded COMUS Music Theatre with Maureen Forrester in Toronto in 1975, and served as its artistic director for three years. He went on to head up the summer Musical Theatre program at the Banff School of Fine Arts - later the Banff Centre - and then to conceive and establish the Music Theatre Studio Ensemble at Banff, offering a unique training program for singers, actors, composers, writers and designers in one ensemble. His book The New Singing Theatre, sub-titled 'A Charter for the Music Theatre Movement', establishes the history and principles of music theatre, and goes on to describe in detail his Banff Music Theatre program. The book was originally published in the UK by Bristol Classical Press, and co-published by Oxford University Press in New York (1990).
